SBM - Magic

The Southern Brotherhood of Magicians

Barry and Stuart are Coming to Town

Bafta-nominated comedy magicians Barry and Stuart are bringing their weirdly wonderful, laughter inducing and awe-inspiring magic show to Ireland for the first time for a series of FREE live shows courtesy of 48, the mobile network for 18 to 22 year olds. The ‘Unlock with 48’ magic and illusion tour will see the creepy, cool and hilariously funny Scottish duo perform a number of free gigs in Dublin and Cork to celebrate the launch of the 48 Unlock Guide.

Until now, switching from one mobile provider to another has been hard work mostly due to the need to unlock your handset. If you are not a techie the idea of unlocking a phone might seem really difficult. The new 48 Unlock Guide, however, offers free and impartial advice to help you unlock your phone without the headache.

Inspired by the 48 Unlock Guide, Barry and Stuart will challenge Irish audiences to unlock their minds and enter the mysterious world of magic as part of their Unlock with 48 tour. Until now, the Scottish pair are probably best known for their involvement in the BBC TV show The Magicians, along with their boundary-pushing The Magic of Jesus and Tricks from the Bible show. Most recently, the duo were on TV screens with their latest series The Happenings where they went undercover in towns in the UK and USA to convince residents that strange, unexplained phenomena were happening in their towns.

Looking forward to their exclusive gigs with 48, Barry said: “We are so excited to be coming to Ireland for the first time; Irish audiences are among the best in the world and we have wanted to perform over here for a long time. We jumped at the chance to work with youth brand 48 to create something new and different. Just like 48, Stuart and I love to push the boundaries and we have our craziest combination of comedy and magic planned for our Unlock shows. It’s not to be missed!”

Aoife McGuigan, Brand Marketing Manager at 48 said: “At 48 we’re pretty excited to bring Barry and Stuart to Ireland for the first time to perform for Irish 18 to 22 year olds. We are huge fans of the guys and know that even the biggest skeptics who come along to their shows will be blown away. We know that unlocking a phone can be difficult if you don’t know how, which is why we created the 48 Unlock Guide to make freeing your phone easier. While Barry and Stuart will show people how easy it is to unlock your mind, we have everything else they need to unlock their phone!”

Tyler Erickson Lecture - 29th of May.

On the 29th of May, Magician and professional magic instructor, Tyler Erickson will be giving a lecture. For those of you who may not know who he is, heres a little piece about him.

"Tyler started magic at the age of 15 by reading books from the library. Quickly realizing he had no interest in fake boxes and hidden mirrors, he became drawn toward things that could be done with ordinary and unprepared objects. (Which, coincidentally, is significantly cheaper than having to buy fake boxes and hidden mirrors.)"

"In addition to his busy performing schedule, Tyler is also a Professional Magic Instructor, operating out of the Twin Cities Magic and Costume shop in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He has a large student following, many of whom are full-time professional magicians. Tyler has designed custom illusions, and even full shows, for other entertainers.  He’s also been a consultant for magic on Television."

This will be a great lecture and im sure everyone will pic something up from this lecture that they can add to their own performances.. Hope to see everyone there

John Pye - President of the IBM, to visit Cork

On Thursday, May 9th 2013, the SBM will be honored to John Pye - Interenational President of the IBM, visit the club. John is a long time friend of the Irish magic community, and it will be our pleasure to welcome him to Cork as President of the IBM.

Here's a little background on John and his iinterest in Magic:-

"John is only the fourth British person to take this role in the society’s 90-year history, having been formally installed at the IBM’s 2012 convention, held in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Achieving this accolade of a worldwide organisation must be the ultimate success for any magician.

John has worked hard for the art of magic for many years now, so this honour is a well deserved recognition of his efforts. He also remains Secretary to the IBM British Ring (the local UK branch) and was also its president in 1995. He is also a Member of The Inner Magic Circle (London) with Gold Star.

John’s interest in magic came from humble beginnings, like so many successful magicians, with a box of tricks as a Christmas present during his childhood days. This sparked off an interest and then with the help of a book on conjuring tricks, borrowed from the local library, the magic bug had definitely bitten.

John initially intended to take up a career in teaching but instead joined the family firm of photographers and printers, Pye’s of Clitheroe, founded by John’s grandfather. The company is still thriving today.

Despite having never lived more than 10 miles from where he was born, John will now take on a global year of travelling to represent the IBM at many international conventions throughout the world."
